There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you’ll be free if you truly wish to be. -Willy Wonka

Oh what a fun Halloween!! I like to treat Halloween as a time to be silly, never scary, and focus on fun. I was going to have Madi be an adorable kittycat but then imagination struck and I decided an Oompa Loompa would be a lot more fun! Let’s be clear here…I wanted her to be the original Oompa Loompa – none of this 2005 stuff.

I pulled out the sewing machine my wonderful husband had bought me last Christmas, and took it out of it’s new box. That’s right. I hadn’t even touched it yet. {I felt horrible!} But no better time than the present! I had Loompaland trousers to sew!!

Now let’s be honest…I didn’t even know who I was, being all Maria from Sound of Music, but I sewed the Oompa Loompa costume from scratch!! I bought the brown turtleneck and socks and used white ducktape for the stripes. I added white pom-poms from the fabric store for the shoes and used green hairspray for the hair. I used a white makeup crayon from a Halloween makeup kit for the eye brows. Madi was quite a spectical walking around with us!

I hadn’t planned to do anything for B and I, but when I heard our friends were also dressing up, I knew I had to step up my game. I ran to Value Village the day before Halloween and completely scored on costumes for B to be Willy Wonka and for me to Varuca Salt.

I still whipped out my Maria sewing skills to make B’s bow tie out of fabric table napkins found at VV Boutique, because I didn’t want to run to the fabric store too! I made the Varuca Salt white arm cuffs and collar from an apron I also found at the thrift store! The dress, purple jacket and hat were all complete scores from the store – which I just had to do some adjustments to.

And voila! We are the perfect little Willy Wonka troop. We definitely turned a lot of heads!!
